Controlling access to your property is always going to be the top priority when it comes to safety and security. It’s the simplest and most effective line of defense for any residential or commercial property. Whether looking at barriers for foot traffic or vehicles, there are loads of effective options.
Barrier gates can appear in a number of forms, from simple metal frames to electronically raised arms that stop vehicle traffic. All perform the simple job of halting the free flow of traffic, while differing in their convenience and size.
Three Types of Barrier Gates
The first type of gate is the single hinge metal tube gate. These are manually operated and usually locked with a chain or built-in latch. The minimal cost is the biggest benefit, although they require either an attendant or the driver of a vehicle to exit and open the gate by hand. They provide a modicum of security and ensure that vehicles cannot easily enter.
Second, there are double door barrier gates that swing on a pair of hinges on either side of the entry path. Many are simple metal constructions that require the same manual opening as single hinge gates, but they are also often operated electronically. In this case, the gate can be opened remotely via an attendant or by the driver of a vehicle. Virtually any electronic access control works here.
Finally, the most modern version of a barrier gate is the raised-arm type. These are what you see at parking garages and toll booths around the country, with a single bar that is raised for entry upon presentation of credentials. The mechanical motion of the gate is controlled electronically and, best of all, takes up the least amount of space possible.
While the first two designs are perfectly suited for rural areas and any situation that requires more security than convenience, the raised arm barrier gate is the best option for any situation requiring frequent usage. The convenience of both compact size and automatic operation is a contributing factor to its common installation.
